In addition to being a fun and social organization, ANZA is committed to giving back to the Philippine community to help those less fortunate than ourselves. ANZA offers a diverse range of volunteer opportunities as well as hosting regular social functions to raise funds to support a number of worthy charities. We focus on women's and children's charities and those which provide assistance for disaster relief.
Our regular events include monthly coffee mornings which support a different charity each month, wine and cheese evenings, a Melbourne Cup lunch and family Christmas parties. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is our Charity Ball which in 2014 and 2015 supported ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking) Philippines by funding the renovation of their shelter for abused and trafficked women and children.
Previous Ball recipients include:
- 2013 - Bahay Tuluyan. Funds raised were applied towards completion of their building for children living and/or working on the streets.
- 2011 and 2012 - Funds raised went towards the reconstruction of a shelter in the grounds of the Hospice de San Jose for victims of domestic abuse and violence.
- 2010 - Funds assisted in the construction of Kanlugan's farm shelter for older disadvantaged boys.
- 2009 - Funds went towards the new Kuya Centre for street kids.
Our 2013 Melbourne Cup Lunch supported Mango Tree House
, a residential home in Manila housing up to 50 young people from 5 to 20 years old. Mango Tree House provides a safe and secure environment where children who may have been abused, abandoned or neglected can stay while they complete their education. The funds allowed Mango Tree to implement 12 aquaponic fish tanks where fish and vegetables are grown simultaneously. The produce from this sustainable project provides food for the Home with any excess being sold at the local market.
Other charities supported by ANZA include:
Missions of Charity in Tondo
ANZA supports the Missions with visits to the orphanage and donation of goods. We provide English enrichment classes run by volunteers on this site for disadvantaged children from the Tondo area. We also provide merienda for these children. Classes are held on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings. 60 children are registered with an average of 40 attending the classes each time.
ANZA sponsors four students graduating from the Tondo English program through University on a rotational basis. To become a volunteer, or if you have additional questions, please contact the Tondo Program Coordinator: Jodie Riley
